A Remarkable live oak

Tree Information

Common Name: live oak

Scientific Name: Quercus virginiana

Category: Old tree

Comments: By estimates, the Algernourne Oak is 471 years old. This tree has been passed by Edgar Allen Poe, who served as a soldier at Fort Monroe, Chief Black Hawk and his warriors, who were "detained" there, President Lincoln, who attended a peace conference there; Robert E Lee who served there prior to the Civil War, and Jefferson Davis, who was held prisoner there. The tree grows comfortably along the well-manicured parade ground at Fort Monroe and as we lived there my two sons played soccer on the parade field beside The Algernourne Oak.
