Comments: This is the Algernourne oak, named for the fort that was later to be known as Fort Monroe. The fort was built in 1609 as a wooden stockade. It was located on the point to defend the entrance to the James River. In 1977 VPI&SU (Virginia Tech) cored surrounding trees and estimated this tree to be 437 years old, or to have been born around 1540, making it 466 years old today. The tree sits inside the Moat of Fort Monroe on the parade field. This tree has truly seen some of America's best and worst days. This tree has been nominated two times by different people.
