Comments: (Editor's note: this tree was reported dead in 2009, was removed and re-made into a children's play structure in nearby Kemper Park.) As you look at the house from the West Lawn, the "original" tulip poplar is the one on the right. The one on the left sometimes looks taller, though its trunk diameter is significantly smaller. We date it to around 1870 or 1880 based on photographic evidence.
