Stand conditions: This hardwood stand occupies a small
hollow in Patrick County Virginia. The species mix suggests that this
is a fairly good site. Remember, larger trees are larger because they
are growing faster. The goal of this silvicultural hardwood cut is to
remove all trees, so that no small (slow growing) trees are left to occupy
the site. There were very few trees "in" the plot at this particular
sampling location. This leads to smaller numbers for board foot volume,
trees per acre, and overall value. This is exactly the reason why timber
cruises sample many points within a stand.
Age: around 60
Trees per acre: 73
Total value per acre: $1448 * (This seems a little low.
Please remember this is based on one sample plot. The next sample plot
may contain 15 trees!)
- Sawtimber: 5000 board feet = $1333
- Pulpwood: 6.6 cords = $115
Cut
it!
* Growth data represented here is based on one prism
point sample within the harvested stand. Monetary data is based on 2003
dollars and timber values. Actual payments to landowners are generally
50% of gross payments, but vary widely with distance to mills, terrain,
harvest size, etc.
