A well-done clearcut leaves
no standing timber, little disturbed soil, and avoids excessive rutting.
This eliminates all of the last generation of trees, including slow-growing
or poorly-formed trees, and allows the next generation of trees to
utilize all of the site resources. Notice the slash left on the site.
Even trees that have little or no value are cut.
* Growth data represented here is based on one prism
point sample within the harvested stand. Monetary data is based on 2003
dollars and timber values. Actual payments to landowners are generally
50% of gross payments, but vary widely with distance to mills, terrain,
harvest size, etc.
