Common Name: hedge maple
Scientific Name: Acer campestre
Category: Unique tree
Comments: This is a state champion tree. Amazingly, the tree was transplanted from the bank across the street where it was slated for removal, to its new location on Mr. Welch's property. The history of this tree species is also amazing. It was planted in England to prevent an attack by the Romans, and once formed a fence that extended across the country. Julius Caesar remarked on the difficulty his armies found in penetrating it.
Best time to photograph: spring, as leaves appear
Nominator: Sam Welch
