Comments: This tree sits on land formerly owned by George Washington, known as Muddy Hole Farm. An arborist who examined it told me it was at least of Civil War age. It is 156" in circumference, has an 84' crown spread,and is about 80' tall. Starting at 9' from the ground it is two-trunked. It has grown around a horizontal metal pole, which is 9' long, 1.5" in diameter, is embedded 15" into the tree, and protrudes from both sides. We have a swing that hangs from its lowest branch. With 30' of rope, it takes you on a long, wonderful ride. The former owner paved over 20% of its dripline. We will cut the driveway back to help the tree. I think it is also a beautiful tree. It is centered at the end of the drive and welcomes us home, in all weather, at all times, and in all seasons. I watch the sunset through its branches, and mark the season by where the sun sets in relation to the trunk of this remarkable tree.
