Comments: This ginko, and another nearby, was given to Commodore Matthew Perry by the Emperor of Japan around 1853. Commodore Perry gave the saplings to Williams Carter Wichkam, a prominent Virginian and later Confederate general, who had them planted at his home, Hickory Hill, in Hanover County. A ginkgo with the same provenance grows at Sherwood Forest, home of President John Tyler, in Charles City County.
