Common Name: eastern redcedar
Scientific Name: Juniperus virginiana
Category: Unique tree
Comments: The unique shape of this redcedar casts a mournful feel as if maintaining a vigil over the grave of Lafayette Meeks, a Confederate soldier who died in 1862. This tree, estimated at approximately 80 years old, was possibly shaped by ice storms or a lightning strike many years ago. Located in the historic village of Appomattox Court House, this tree is located near the McLean House where General Lee surrendered his army to General Grant.
