Comments: This tree, known as the Independence Tree, grows on the south side of the Bowling Green at historic Mount Vernon. It is believed to have been planted in 1780, as a part of George Washington's landscape plan. It was featured in a Parade Magazine article in 1976. A matching tree grows directly across the Green from this tree, adding perfect symmetry to the grounds.
