Common Name: yellow-poplar
Scientific Name: Liriodendron tulipifera
Category: Historic tree
Comments: This tree grows at Mount Vernon on the north side of the Bowling Green. It was planted around 1790, and is believed to have been part of his landscape plan. An equally large yellow-poplar grows directly across the Bowling Green, providing symmetry. The buckeye growing next to the yellow-poplar was once attributed to Washington, but is now known to be a much younger tree. It was however, taken from the mouth of the Cheat River, an area where Washington surveyed.
