A Remarkable black walnut

Tree Information

Common Name: black walnut

Scientific Name: Juglans nigra

Category: Historic tree

Comments: This tree is located on an historic property, the Ben Bolt estate, which was the site of a very intersting and unique Civil War engagement. It was here that the Union army captured some confederate guns, stacked them against the tree, and prepared to destroy them. Setting the guns afire, they began to discharge, surprising and confusing the soldiers, who beat a hasty retreat. This estate also marks the headwaters of the Clinch River, which flows into the Mississippi via the Tennessee River, and is known as one of the most biodiverse rivers in North America.
