Common Name: live oak
Scientific Name: Quercus virginiana
Category: Unique tree
Comments: These trees are a living jungle gym for the students at Willoughby Elementary School in Norfolk, one block from the southern shore of Chesapeake Bay. There is a nearby shrine that commerates the landing of the Sarah Constant at Cape Henry, though the first landing of the Jamestown colonists is now believed to have been closer to First Landing State Park. The dune in the background is the last remaining mature dune in Norfolk, and was recently protected by the Norfolk Environmental Commission, at the urging of students and teachers at the school. The historic Willoughby oak is just down the street.
