A Remarkable bur oak

Tree Information

Common Name: bur oak

Scientific Name: Quercus macrocarpa

Category: Historic tree

Comments: The bur oak across from Burruss Hall is easily the most recognized tree on the Virginia Tech campus. This tree has witnessed the creation and evolution of Virginia Tech. It has been featured on Virginia Tech post cards since the early part of the 1900s. Many visiting alumni stop by the tree when visiting or ask people that have recently visited campus if it is still there. Despite being in a location that receives heavy foot traffic and salt runoff from the road and sidewalk, and little care, this tree has managed to thrive. When this tree's life finally comes to an end it will be missed by all who have attended Tech and sat under its shady branches on a hot day.
