Common Name: eastern redcedar
Scientific Name: Juniperus virginiana
Category: Historic tree
Comments: George Washington Birthplace National Monument contains several cedar groves and allees. The grove on Burnt House Point may have historic significance as an early history of Westmoreland County describes Popes Creek as Cedar Island Creek because of the abundance of cedars within this watershed. Early efforts in historic preservation and colonial revival resulted in the planting of additional cedars at Duck Hall and allees leading to the historic core of the park as well as the monument and Bridges Creek Road.
Best time to photograph: Any time.
