A Remarkable loblolly pine

Tree Information

Common Name: loblolly pine

Scientific Name: Pinus taeda

Category: Historic tree

Comments: This tree is nominated by the members of Merchants Hope Episcopal Church in Hopewell, VA. The church was built circa 1700 and is a national and Virginia historic landmark. The parish gets its name from one of the ships that regularly sailed between England and the colonies, and the trading company that gave the original half acre on which the church stands. The interior of the church was largely destroyed by Union soldiers during the seige of Petersburg. The tree was cored in 2000 and found to be 160 years old. Since that time, two companion tree were lost to lightning and beetle infestation. "This last old mighty tree is a beauty and testimony to the greatness of God as one enters his house."
