Common Name: live oak
Scientific Name: Quercus virginiana
Category: Unique tree
Comments: This tree is located inside the moat on Fort Monroe, VA. Directly next to the oak lies a historic civil war era cannon. The tree sharply sprawls outward in one general direction almost like it was trying to provide shade to the soldiers firing the cannon. The cannon was used during the civil war to defend the Hampton Roads harbor from intruders. This tree has literally been shaped by Hampton Roads.
