Common Name: eastern redcedar
Scientific Name: Juniperus virginiana
Category: Historic tree
Comments: This is a cedar grove at George Washington's Birthplace (Popes Creek Plantation in Westmoreland County). About a third of the cedars went down in Hurricane Isabel and a subsequent hit by cyclonic winds, but there are still about 175 eastern redcedars in the grove and they are still impressive. Most of the trees in the grove were probably planted in the 1930s.
