Common Name: Kentucky coffeetree
Scientific Name: Gymnocladus dioicus
Category: Champion (big) tree
Comments: This is the state champion big tree located at Ellwood Farm, part of the Fredericksburg National Military Park. It was originally nominated by Frank E. McKeever; remeasured and photographed by Jeff Kirwan in September, 2006. The tree is remarkable for its location- the site where Stonewall Jackson's arm is buried. The Lacy Family, who also owned Chatham House overlooking Fredericksburg, believed that the Jackson's arm deserved a dignified burial. See also the recedars at the cemetery.
Dendrology Notes: see the VA Big Tree website
Nominator: Janice Frye
