Oxygen levels are directly related to temperature. Warm water holds less dissolved oxygen than cold water. If temperatures drastically increase, fishes have trouble breathing and can eventually die. Elevated temperature also triggers bacteria to use more oxygen in waters already depleted of oxygen.
