Common Name: saucer magnolia
Scientific Name: Magnolia xsoulangiana
Category: Historic tree
Comments: This tree in Roanoke's Elmwood Park was reportedly brought to the States by Commodore Perry about one hundred and sixty years ago. It stands in the park without any marker to show its historical significance. Commodore Perry's expedition to Japan changed history, and this tree was part of that change. Incidentally, besides this purple magnolia, the expedition brought back one hundred and thirty plants from Shimoda, with many more from other parts of Japan.
