Common Name: Japanese maple
Scientific Name: Acer palmatum
Category: Old tree
Comments: This split leaf maple, twisted with time, is located in front of a greenhouse built in 1810 on Oatlands Plantation. The low branches bent with the years show grace and dignity. Because of it's age and artistic shape, plus it's location on this historic property part of the National Trust and originally owned by the George Carter family of VA., I find this a remarkable tree. (Author's note: this tree appears on page 200 of the book, but this photo is even more spectacular!)
Best time to photograph: morning in the fall
Nominator: Carla Steckley
