A Remarkable willow oak

Tree Information

Common Name: willow oak

Scientific Name: Quercus phellos

Category: Historic tree

Comments: This willow oak is between two houses that were built in the 1960's in Valentine Hills Subdivision in Henrico County. Before it was developed by Stinson, it was the Valentine Farm Property. I have a friend that as a child would ride in a wagon up the hill to get their milk. Mrs. Valentine is said to have sat under the tree during the afternoon and rock to keep cool. She always wanted her husband to build her a house under the tree. It measures about 25 feet around. About five feet up or so, the trunk splits. My mother lives in the house below it and every year a Cooper's hawk nests in it. Mr. Stinson made the property line in the middle of the tree so it would not be cut down.
