Common Name: southern magnolia
Scientific Name: Magnolia grandiflora
Category: Champion (big) tree
Comments: This tree is located in Hampton, Va. on the grounds of St. John's Episcopal Church that dates from the early 1700's. The tree is immense, surely the largest magnolia I have ever seen. It is so old and large that the limbs at the very bottom are some 25 feet above the ground. With it being in a much frequented church yard, I can't understand why it has never been documented previously.
