Common Name: southern magnolia
Scientific Name: Magnolia grandiflora
Category: Other
Comments: This tree was one of several specimen trees planted by the owner's grandfather on the family property around the turn of the 20th Century and is over 100 years old. It is located on an exposed point of land near the mouth of the Hampton River. The tree is in good health. It has managed to survive numerous hurricanes and other storms where most of its neighbors have not. Several years ago it also survived a suspicious fire in the duff beneath its branches. This caused part of the crown on one side of the tree to be less full. The tree is flanked by a pair of eastern redcedars that probably predate the magnolia itself.
