Common Name: hackberry
Scientific Name: Celtis occidentalis
Category: Champion (big) tree
Comments: The Marion Hill Hackberry is apparently in the top three or so Big Trees of this species. It is 181 inches in circumference, 80 feet in height, and averages 95 feet in crown spread. The tree is located in the Marion Hill neighborhood, a steep promontory rising to the east side of Virginia Byway Route 5, just above the lowlands of historic 'Tree Hill Farm'. Marion Hill has been known by that name since the latter part of the 18th century. This Hackberry is known to have been mature in 1871. In that year the owner of the nearby frame farmhouse died and was buried beneath it. He was later moved to Oakwood Cemetery on Nine Mile Road. During the time that the nominator was on site, evidence of recent bulldozer activity was present inside the tree's drip ring. The tree now appears that it may be threatened by development.
