Comments: This is the state champion blue spruce (largest of its kind) in Virginia in 2008, with 173 total points. This tree was originally nominated in 1987. It grew next to a house that was reportedly shot up by Union soldiers as they retreated over Salt Pond Mountain, now most famous for Mountain Lake Hotel. The tree can be seen from Rt. 460 heading west past Eastern Elementary/Middle School.
