Common Name: eastern white pine
Scientific Name: Pinus strobus
Category: Champion (big) tree
Comments: This and a nearby white pine were found while trying to locate a state champion eastern hemlock. Although the hemlock died from the hemlock woolly adelgid, these two trees are thriving. They are the tallest (approaching 170 ft.) trees on record for Virginia. This is not surprising when you consider they are growing in a narrow gorge called Ramseys Draft.
