Common Name: chinkapin oak
Scientific Name: Quercus muehlenbergii
Category: Old tree
Comments: This tree, on the banks of the Shenandoah's south fork at McGaheysville near Elkton, is thought to be 300 years old - a middle-aged tree when the Constitution was signed. A main reason for nominating it, in addition to age, is its location - hanging onto the bank of the Shenandoah river, bending out toward the river, the scene of many a coon-hunt (in its trunk!), children's circle games, and religious observances, including baptisms. A third main reason is the tree's "personality" that strikes the viewer on first approach - as I wrote in my story, "There's something about this tree . . . " that goes beyond words.
