Comments: According to family tradition, when Joseph Poindexter, Capt. of the Bedford militia during the American Revolution, died in 1826, someone stuck a sycamore switch in the grave and it took root and grew, eventually pushing the gravestone aside and breaking it in half. This tree is 110 feet tall, circumference of 14 feet 2 inches (170 inches)with a crown spread of 110 feet. It dwarfs all of the surrounding trees and shades the whole graveyard. The site is still maintained and visitor friendly.
