Common Name: eastern white pine
Scientific Name: Pinus strobus
Category: Beautiful tree
Comments: This is a natural "shelterwood" of white pines growing on the Jefferson National Forest. A shelterwood is a timber harvesting practice that allows a moderately tolerant (of shade) tree to regenerate under a partial canopy of dominant trees. Here the white pine overstory has been thinned by nature, allowing a beautiful stand of new white pines to regenerate underneath.
