A Remarkable pignut hickory

Tree Information

Common Name: pignut hickory

Scientific Name: Carya glabra

Category: Unique tree

Comments: Grassy Hill Natural Area Preserve is a prominent landmark on the west side of the Town of Rocky Mount. The site is characterized by rocky slopes forested with hardwood species and scattered patches of Virginia pine. Unusual soil and rock substrates provide habitat for rare woodland communities. As the name suggests, grassy areas may have once dominated the site, and today open-grown oaks with low spreading crowns are found amidst younger, closely spaced trees. Trees were cored and found to be at least 175 years and probably over 200.

Best time to photograph: winter afternoon
