Comments: In 1992, a group of foresters cored a Bald Cypress tree at the site of where Grants troops crossed the James River in June of 1864. The cypress core sample was determined to be over 350 years old and is documented in the Matthew Brady Co. photographs taken from the south shore of the James River at Flowerdew Hundred.
