Comments: This tree was a "volunteer" that came up in the late 1920's or early 1930's. It used to sit 50 - 60 feet off of the shore, but coastal erosion, etc. has left it almost on the shoreline. While not a remarkably old tree, it is quite big, perhaps due to a ready supply of fresh water from an underground aquifer that it sits atop. We use this tree to pinpoint our location when returning from boating trips, as it stands out so readily. It managed to weather hurricanes Isabel and Ernesto recently, but I'm sad to say it's probably a matter of time before Mother Nature reclaims her.
