A Remarkable blackgum

Tree Information

Common Name: blackgum

Scientific Name: Nyssa sylvatica

Category: Old tree

Comments: Black tupelo is a long-lived tree that can live 250 to 600 years. Although most old black tupelos are hollow and cannot be cored, one indication of their age is the size of the plates that make up the bark. This tree, growing at the base of Pocosin Hollow, near Shenandoah National Park, is noteworthy for its large plates, and is believed to be very old.
