A Remarkable white oak

Tree Information

Common Name: white oak

Scientific Name: Quercus alba

Category: Beautiful tree

Comments: This beautiful Oak is carefully placed on the campus of Catawba Hospital. The Hospital is actually on the grounds of the Roanoke Red Sulphur Springs Resort opened by Joesph F. Chapman in 1858. In 1909 the Commonwealth of Virginia built a TB Sanitorium at Catawba, based on the works of Dr. Edward Livingston Trudeau. Trudeau's methods were "an invigorating climate, an open-air life, rest, coupled with the careful regulation of the daily habits and an abundant supply of nutritious food". Today, Catawba Hospital serves the needs of Geriatric and Adults with psychiatric conditions. As was the case since it was a resort property - the beautiful trees and grounds contribute to the recovery of people visiting here even today.

Best time to photograph: Beautiful sunrise each morning over Catawba Mountain as a back drop to this lovely tree
