Common Name: white oak
Scientific Name: Quercus alba
Category: Historic tree
Comments: Upperville Great White Oak: Until 1853, horses were shown in contests at local agricultural fairs, but the Upperville Colt and Horse show was the first competition in the United States exclusively for horses. The show has been an enduring annual event for Virginia's horse country, except for a hiatus during the Civil War. Upperville's Great White Oak, with a crown circumference of over 250 feet, is the largest of a group of Oaks that form a backdrop for the show's majesty.
