Comments: We decided to submit this tree to give it some well deserved recognition and allow others with simular interests in Big/Old trees a chance to enjoy ours. We don't know if it will make the cut as largest for it's species in VA, but we think it will be among the top 5 or 6. This tree measures 126 inches in circumference at 4 1/2 feet above ground, and is approximately 140 feet tall with an average crown spread of 76 feet. With the current urban sprawl and U.S. Census claming 300 millon people now in the U.S., there are very few trees of this size still around. In September,"2003" Hurricane Isabelle up-rooted six mature trees on our farm. The only damage to this tree was the loss of one limb, however that limb was about the same size as the up-rooted trees. When you think about what mother nature has dealt us in just the last 10 years, then try to imagine what it takes to survive 300 to 400 years, you can't help but be impressed by this huge tree still standing in front of you and still a
