Common Name: white ash
Scientific Name: Fraxinus americana
Category: Historic tree
Comments: The lawn at U VA is landscaped with white ash. William Pratt, the first superintendent of the grounds, apparently produced a master plan around 1858, and in 1860, ash and red maples were planted on the south lawn to replace black locusts (one of TJ's favorite native trees). Since some of the trees obscure the facades of the Pavilions, there's a plan in place to re-plant over the years, still using ash and maples.
