Common Name: American sycamore
Scientific Name: Platanus occidentalis
Category: Historic tree
Comments: The west side of the lawn in front of the Rotunda at U Va is landscaped with sycamores. They are believed to predate 1860 (as they are said to appear in a photo of the great fire that destroyed the annex to the rotunda). There are also notes that say they were planted in the late 1820's as part of a plan to create a "pleasure ground" north of the Rotunda (Cathy Clary).
