Common Name: white oak
Scientific Name: Quercus alba
Category: Community tree
Comments: This white oak holds a place of prominence at Jahnke Road Baptist Church, where we refer to it as our "Oak of Righteousness" because of the passage from Isaiah 6:3b (NIV), "They will be called oaks of rightoursness, a planting of the Lord, for the display of his splendor" The church was organized in 1950 and construction began a few years later. The tree, mature and strong at that time, was preserved. The parkinglot was not paved until 1990 for fear the tree would suffer. The tree is a place of fellowship. The congregation holds neighborhood Ice Cream Socials under the breanches, the Sunny Day child care children rest from kickball games in the shade, and Sunday Services were held underneath after Hurrican Isabel. What better reminder to a congregation than the personified tree of Joyce Kilmer's poem Trees "A tree that looks at God all day and lifts it's leafy arms to pray." Editor's note: a memorial service for the tree's nominator, Lucile Michaels, was held at the church in June 2007
Best time to photograph: April - October mid day
Nominator: Lucile Michaels
