Common Name: sugar maple
Scientific Name: Acer saccharum
Category: Historic tree
Comments: There are old-growth sugar maples (~14 ft. circumference) growing where Dead Run enters the Potomac River. According to the book, Landmarks of Old Prince William, American Indians visited an area that is now the border between Fairfax and Loudoun Counties to gather maple sap. This may be where the name Sugarland Run comes from.
