Common Name: white oak
Scientific Name: Quercus alba
Category: Community tree
Comments: This tree was featured in a remake of the movie Lassie, which featured local Tazewell County 4-H members, and their trips to the county and state fairs. The movie told the story of youth who had carved Lassie's name in a tree, then returned years later to see if they could find the tree. Indeed, they did, and this is the tree that featured prominently in the story, with the historic and beautiful Thompson Valley in the background. In the picture, 4-H Extension Agent Jon Blankenship points to the Lassie inscription that can still be seen.
