A Remarkable red mulberry

Tree Information

Common Name: red mulberry

Scientific Name: Morus rubra

Category: Historic tree

Comments: This mulberry tree is located at Historic Jamestowne. In the early years of the Virginia colony the English settlers sought methods to find profit from the resources in Virginia. One effort was the attempt to produce silk. Silk worms favored the leaves from mulberry trees. Perhaps this tree is decendent from the mulberries growing at Jamestown in the early 17th century. The berries from this tree are ripe each spring in mid-May when the park notes the anniversary of the establishment of Jamestown as the first permanent English settlement in North America.
