Comments: This tree is part of an old-growth stand of trees next to the Appalachian Trail on Brush Mountain. Several trees in the stand have been dated to the 1740's. Other tree species in the stand include bear oak, pitch pine and table mountain pine. Though small, these trees are living in a very difficult environment, with shallow soils and frequent disturbance typical of Appalachian ridgetops.
