Comments: The Derwent Oaks were nominated in 1977 as a Virginia Notable Tree. General Robert E. Lee brought his family to Derwent after the surrender at Appomattox Court House. Accustomed to much larger, finer houses, Mrs. Lee wrote "...but is a little retired place with a straight uphouse and the only beauty it possesses is a fine growth of oaks which surround it." In 1977, only two of the original oaks remained. It was here in 1865 that Lee decided to accept the presidency of Washington College in Lexington (now Washington and Lee).
