A Remarkable yellow-poplar

Tree Information

Common Name: yellow-poplar

Scientific Name: Liriodendron tulipifera

Category: Other

Comments: This is a legendary tree that was nearly destroyed by Hurricane Isabel. It grows in front of Berkeley Plantation, an historic site that spans three periods in Virginia's history- European settlement, national independence and the Civil War. It is the site of the nation's first Thanksgiving in 1609; the home of Benjamin Harrison, a signer of the Declaration of Independence; and U.S. President William Henry Harrison. In 1862, Berkeley Plantation was headquarters and supply base for 140,000 Union troops under the command of Gen. George McClellan. President Lincoln reviewed troops here. The tree pictured here is the same one pictured in a Matthew Brady photograph.
