A Remarkable white oak

Comments: This majestic white oak tree rises out of a triangle of soil within an intersection of two gravel roads in western Amherst County. One of these roads was a throughfare since the time the area was first settled, and boasted quite a bit of traffic during the late 19th century when the area was a thriving farming community. The tree is the namesake of Oak Grove, an historic community of which it was once the center. In the woods not far from the roadside is the foundation of the Church which was the center of this community. Now called Cedar Creek (SR643), this road once continued across the Pedlar River (about 2 miles away) and on into Pedlar Mills, an historic mill town and the main population center of the area back when Lynchburg was only accessible by ferry. Pedlar Mills once boasted several working mills all powered by the Pedlar River.
