Comments: THE WISDOM TREE - At 70" dbh (220 in. circumference), 85 ft. tall, with a 110 ft. crown spread, this willow oak on Marine Corps Base Quantico is one of the largest trees on base. Its wide, symmetrical crown provides shade and beauty to this tiny park in this historically rich setting along the bank of the Potomac River, about 35 miles south of the nation's capitol. The tree, estimated to have been born around the start of the Civil War, is in excellent condition for its age. A kiosk contains a display that explains the historic significance of the site, depicted as seen by this tree since 1860. Events include a Confederate artillery battery blockading Union ships from bringing supplies out of the capitol, the building of the Quantico Shipyard in 1916, and the formation of some of the original structures that formed the Marine base beginning in 1917.
