Comments: This tree is adjoining the property of the antebellum St. Thomas Episcopal Church. This church was visited regularly by CSA Gen. Robert E. Lee while the Army of Northern Virginia was in its winter encampment around Orange Courthouse during the winter of 1863-64. There is a plaque in front of the tree which reads, "GEN. R.E. LEE / TIED "TRAVELER" TO THIS TREE REGULARLY /WHEN HE ATTENDED / SERVICES IN / ST. THOMAS CHURCH / WINTER OF 1863-1854"
